About us

Nottingham Sperm Bank was established in the 1970s and is based at NUH Life Fertility Services, a purpose-built, modern clinic at Queen’s Medical Centre. As part of Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust, we are not a commercial sperm bank and we don’t make any profit –  all our income is fed straight back into the NHS. So by donating at NUH Life, you’re not only helping families achieve their dreams, you’re supporting the NHS too.

Who we are

We are a small team of around 15 – including doctors, nurses, scientists, administrators and counsellors – completely dedicated to the fertility service and donor bank.

Sperm donors are looked after by our specialist Andrologists (healthcare scientists), Karen and Jo. They’ll guide you through the whole process, from initial enquiry to letting you know about any children born through your donation.

We know that to potential donors, sperm donation can feel daunting, embarrassing, or a bit awkward – but it doesn’t have to! We’ll do our best to help you feel comfortable, confident and at ease with your decision to donate.

Because we’re such a small team, you’ll get to know us pretty quickly and we’ll get to know you too. We’re privileged to still be in touch with donors from decades ago. It’s this personal, compassionate, ethical practice that has kept donors reaching out to us for over 50 years.

At NUH Life, we provide a comprehensive range of female and male diagnostic fertility services, and treatment options. Most of our donor sperm recipients have donor insemination treatment here at the clinic.

Meet the team

Karen

Andrology Service Lead

I lead a small team of highly specialised scientists at NUH Life. Together we provide a whole suite of diagnostic, treatment and storage services for fertility, oncology and trans patients, as well as the sperm donors.

I’ve been involved in the running of Nottingham donor bank since 1997! I’m very fortunate to absolutely love my job – it’s a real privilege to be involved in helping people create a family. Outside of work I love to bake and cook, which I try to counterbalance with Zumba, Pilates and personal training.

Jo

Senior Andrologist

I joined the NUH Life team as a HCPC-registered Clinical Andrologist in 2020. Prior to this, I completed a Master’s Degree in Assistive Reproductive Technology (ART) at the University of Nottingham, followed by another Master’s Degree in Clinical Science as part of the NHS Scientist Training Programme.

My role at NUH Life involves a great mixture of laboratory work and direct contact with patients and donors. I feel very fortunate to work alongside such a fantastic team in a job I love, I consider it a real honour to be able to help people achieve their dream of creating a family.

Victoria

Quality Manager

I am an HCPC registered Clinical Embryologist, with over 15 years’ experience of working in fertility and IVF clinics. I joined NUH Life in January 2023 as Quality Manager. I took on the additional role of HFEA Person Responsible in September 2025. As PR I am legally responsible for all NUH life’s activity, staff, patient and donor experience. Working in fertility is a huge privilege, and my goal is to provide high quality, ethical and compassionate fertility care to all.

Outside of work, you can find me singing along to a variety of 00s classics in the gym, scrambling in the Peak District, camping, travelling and exploring the world as much as possible.

I’d urge any man who can to consider being a sperm donor. When I look back on what I’ve done with my life so far, my work in fertility is one of the things I’m proudest of. You’ll be sharing the talents and skills that make you special, and giving a precious gift to somebody yearning for the happiness a child of their own can bring.
